Autumn lawn care

Caring for Your Lawn After a Hot, Dry Summer

A dry, hot summer can leave even well‑kept lawns looking pale, thin and patchy. Autumn offers the best recovery window: the soil is still warm, rain returns, and roots are active. With a few targeted steps you can rebuild colour, density and resilience before winter.

1) Prepare the surface

Mow to a moderate height (around 30–40 mm) and remove clippings so treatments can reach the soil. Rake out loose debris and lightly scarify if thatch is heavy. If the ground has baked hard, hollow‑tine aeration improves water penetration and root development.

2) Balance the soil with Bio‑Lime

Drought and regular mowing gradually acidify soil, making it harder for grass to use nutrients. Applying Viano Bio‑Lime in early autumn raises pH into a healthier range and discourages moss. Granules spread easily and can be used in autumn, winter or spring. As a guide, 20 kg treats about 400 m². Correcting pH first makes every feed more effective.

3) Feed for sustained recovery

Once pH is corrected, feed to restore colour and strength.

  • Viano Autumn Lawn Treatment: an organic‑based formula with magnesium, iron and Humifirst that greens, thickens and strengthens for up to 100 days.

  • Viano Lawn Boost: organo‑mineral nutrition with added magnesium and iron for fast colour and improved drought tolerance, also feeding for 100 days.

Apply evenly with a calibrated spreader. A 10 kg bag typically covers about 200 m². Water in if rain is not expected.

4) Repair thin and bare patches

Where heat left gaps, overseed and support establishment with Viano Recovery, a 100% organic follow‑on feed containing Humifirst to stimulate rooting. Overseed after mowing and raking, keep seedbed moist for the first fortnight, then resume normal mowing once seedlings reach cutting height.

5) Tackle moss the natural way

If moss is present, treat it with MO Bacter. It works by indirect action, breaking down moss without blackening or raking, while beneficial bacteria turn thatch into plant food. It is organic‑based, child‑ and pet‑friendly when used as directed, and has RHS approval. Apply when growth is active and conditions are moist.

  • Aim to treat while soil temperatures are above 12 °C and grass is actively growing.
  • Time applications just before light rain, or water in within a few days.

  • Brush any stray granules off paving.

  • Avoid feeding during drought or frost.

  • Leave at least a week between different granular applications if applying multiple products, unless the label states they can be used together.

Eco credentials that matter

Choosing Viano supports a cleaner approach to lawn care. Production in Belgium is powered by solar energy to reduce CO₂ emissions, and the range focuses on organic or organic‑based formulations that work with soil biology. You get reliable performance and a lighter footprint.
